It’s Alright To Switch Your Major…

Posted By on April 10th, 2012

As you may know from reading previous blogs, I am an Anthropology/Sociology and Legal Studies double major… for now. However, I am actually in the process of getting a few more signatures and then I won’t be saying that anymore. Instead, I’ll be an Anthropology/Sociology and Psychology double major.

I decided to switch my major for a few reasons, and one really important one. The most important thing to me was that 10 years from now, or even three when I am walking across the stage graduating, I didn’t want to look back on college and wish I had done something when I had the chance. Now don’t get me wrong, I liked my Legal Studies major but everyday when my friends would be talking about their Psychology courses I found myself wishing I was in them instead.

Another reason is that there are two paths in life that I could see myself heading in- being a Psychology professor or becoming a lawyer. I thought that it may in fact be difficult to become a Psychology professor without a degree in that subject… right? Though as of now I am still set on attending law school in a few years, I know that I don’t have to have a specific major to apply. Therefore, while I have the opportunity, I am going to major in two of my favorite subject areas that would work for whichever path I chose to take, and enjoy every moment of it.

The moral of my story- don’t be afraid to switch your major if you really want to. There are a lot of people around here at RWU willing to help and figure out the best options, even if they’re not your advisor. Talk to your professors, family, peers or anyone else you want to. It’s not a difficult process, and at the end of the day it’s your education and your happiness. One of the greatest things about college (maybe because I’m a nerd…) is to be able to sit in a class for three hours a week and enjoy every minute of it.

I don’t know who originally said this but…

“do what you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life.”

So yeah, after writing this one of my biggest pieces of advice to everyone is to major in what love, and don’t be afraid to make a switch if you have changed your mind. Make your own life choices, and follow your own life path.

PS- I know that probably sounded cliché and cheesy, but I’m 100% serious. There are many opportunities in college, so take advantage of them.
